Anne Spence is an award winning assemblage artist and painter from the Chicago area who has made her home in rural New Jersey since 1996.
She received her BA, double major in Philosophy and East Asian Studies, minor in Comparative Religion, from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio in 1988. Additional coursework in filmmaking from 1991 to 1993 at Columbia College, Chicago honed her eye, and professional training in picture framing, sign making, hand block-printing and gallery work set the stage for her professional art career. Exhibiting regionally in galleries, museums and art centers since 1998, she began exhibiting nationally in 2007.
A member of the National Association of Women Artists, Spence has developed an artistic vocabulary using a variety of household objects and natural elements. Often evoking the perspective and exuberance of childhood, her work also addresses the changing nature of our priorities. Exploring what we define as precious, what we consider worthwhile, who or what we long for, and how those answers change for each of us over time are recurring themes.
Anne Spence lives and works in Milford, New Jersey. |
